Know the ICA Requirements for Bringing Pets to Colombia
Traveling with pets has become increasingly common. Whether it's for moving, vacations, family visits, or even participating in competitions and exhibitions, many people consider their pets as family members and want them to accompany them wherever they go. However, when planning a trip to Colombia with your pet, it is crucial to know and comply with the requirements set by the Colombian Agricultural Institute (ICA) to ensure a smooth entry. Below, we provide a comprehensive guide to help you through this process.
1. Health Certificate
To enter Colombia, your pet must have a health certificate issued by an authorized veterinarian in the country of origin. This certificate must be issued within 10 days prior to the trip and include the following information:
- Name, breed, sex, and age of the pet.
- A declaration that the pet is free from contagious diseases.
- Information about administered vaccinations.
2. Vaccination
Pets must be vaccinated against certain diseases before entering Colombia:
- Dogs: Must be vaccinated against rabies, distemper, parvovirus, hepatitis, leptospirosis, and coronavirus.
- Cats: Must be vaccinated against rabies, panleukopenia, rhinotracheitis, and calicivirus.
The rabies vaccine must be administered at least 30 days before the travel date and no more than one year prior.
3. Antiparasitic Treatments
The health certificate must indicate that the pet has been treated for internal and external parasites within 15 days prior to the trip. This treatment must be performed by an authorized veterinarian and specify the products used.
4. Specific Requirements for Dangerous Dog Breeds
Colombia has special regulations for dogs of breeds considered dangerous, such as pit bulls, rottweilers, and dobermans, among others. These dogs must meet additional requirements, such as:
- Use of a muzzle during inspection.
- Presentation of a liability insurance policy that covers potential damages to third parties.
5. Additional Documentation for Animals Under 3 Months
If your pet is under 3 months old, a rabies vaccination is not required. However, you must present a declaration from the veterinarian indicating the exact age of the animal and its good health.
6. Procedures for Other Companion Animals
For pet birds and ferrets, rabbits, chinchillas, hamsters, guinea pigs, and gerbils as companion animals, the following is required:
Tips for a Safe and Comfortable Trip for Your Pet
- Suitable Carrier: Use a carrier that complies with international animal transport standards. It should be large enough for your pet to move comfortably.
- Hydration and Feeding: Provide enough water and food during the trip. Some airlines have restrictions on feeding during the flight, so check the airline's policies.
- Identification: Ensure your pet has identification with your contact information and any additional documentation required in case of an emergency.
Traveling to Colombia with your pet can be a stress-free experience if you meet all the ICA requirements. Proper preparation and ensuring your pet is in good health are key to a smooth entry into the country.
